With the college application season approaching, I want to share some essential tips to help you navigate the process successfully.
- Up-Level Your Activities and Awards List
- Use Active Verbs: Instead of saying you “worked at a clinic,” try “organized animal diagnosis notes and provided medical assistance.”
- Avoid Redundancy: Use varied language. Instead of “teaching tennis,” try “instructing students in proper technique and sportsmanship.”
- Quantify Impact: Be specific. Instead of “raised money,” try “raised $1,000 to provide 10 scholarships.”
- Write a Memorable Essay
- Read Aloud: This helps you identify “flat” writing and ensure your unique voice and humor come through.
- Be Specific: Use descriptions of settings and moments to ensure your essay stands out among thousands of applicants.
- Keep it Simple: Focus on clarity and ensure your essay aligns with your chosen topic.
- Manage Application Stress
- Breathe and Plan: Use purposeful breathing to stay grounded and create a step-by-step plan with weekly goals to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
- Reflect and Recharge: Remember your past accomplishments and take time for activities you enjoy, like walking or reading.
- Ask for Help: Identify what you need and reach out to mentors or advisors for guidance.
- Build a Strategic College List
Consider your goals, passions, and who you want to be. Evaluate options based on size, distance, location, and cost to create a balanced list.
